The project

Understanding their rights, accessing services, finding information about training opportunities or taking part in activities can be challenging for young people when information is difficult to understand.

The European project That’s Clear! aims to make communication within youth organisations clearer and more accessible, particularly for young people facing literacy difficulties, language barriers or cognitive disabilities.

To achieve this, the project draws on plain language and universal design principles. It provides training and practical tools for youth workers while actively involving young people in the design and evaluation of communication materials intended for them.

Background

Youth organisations play an essential role in supporting young people. However, the information they provide does not always reflect the diversity of their audiences.

Complex administrative documents, technical vocabulary and poorly designed materials can create barriers to accessing rights, services and opportunities, particularly for young people facing social exclusion.

Plain language helps make information easier to understand and use without changing its meaning. Although still relatively uncommon in the youth sector, it offers a practical way to improve communication accessibility and encourage greater participation.

Objectives

That’s Clear! project aims to:

  • Improve access to information for young people, particularly those facing difficulties understanding written communication.
  • Train youth workers in plain language and the design of accessible communication materials.
  • Involve young people in analysing, creating and evaluating information intended for them.
  • Encourage youth organisations to adopt more inclusive communication practices in their everyday work.

Target groups

The project primarily addresses youth workers and youth organisations, including educators, youth centres, associations and organisations providing support and guidance to young people.

It also targets young people aged 15 to 25, particularly those facing barriers to accessing information due to literacy or learning difficulties, cognitive disabilities, limited language proficiency or social exclusion.

Resources and activities

To help youth organisations improve their communication practices, That’s Clear! develops a range of practical resources:
Pour accompagner les structures jeunesse dans l’évolution de leurs pratiques, That’s Clear! développe plusieurs ressources :

  • A European diagnosis of communication practices, based on the analysis of existing materials and participatory workshops involving young people and youth workers.
  • A guide to clear and inclusive communication, offering recommendations to make information more accessible to young people.
  • A five-module training programme, available face-to-face and online, helping youth workers assess, create and adapt communication materials.
  • Plain language resources (brochures, posters, infographics and other materials), developed by the project partners and evaluated with young people.
  • Evaluation tools and a good practice guide, helping youth workers apply these approaches in their daily activities.

All resources are intended to be freely accessible through the That’s Clear! project website.
