The book

In this bilingual French / LSF (French sign language) ABC book, the alphabet unfolds in words and signs. B is for… Butterfly. But how do you sign the B? And best of all, how do you sign Butterfly? This poetic, educational picture book invites children of all ages to open up to linguistic and cultural diversity.

What is the dactyl alphabet?

The dactylological (or manual) alphabet is a set of signs that associates a hand configuration with each letter of the written alphabet.

What’s it for?

It’s a complementary means of communication to sign language. In particular, it can be used to spell proper nouns when the sign is not yet known or created (names, places, brands, etc.), following the logic of written languages (a word is made up of a series of letters).

What about words in sign language?

Sign language words are not based on a combination of letters, but have their own sign. Signs can be mimetic, symbolic or derived from the dactyl alphabet.
