What is dyspraxia?
Dyspraxia, also known as “developmental coordination disorder”, is a neurological problem that is as common as dyslexia, but much less frequently diagnosed.
This invisible disability is revealed when new skills are tested or stimulated out of context. Thus, dyspraxia affects gesture, ideation, motor planning and execution processes.
Dyspraxia can affect any area of development: physical, intellectual, emotional, social, language and sensory. This disorder can also impair learning abilities. It is not a unitary disorder; it affects each person in different ways, at different ages, stages of development and degrees.
Despite growing awareness, there are still large deficits in information, training and tools in society in general and in education systems in particular.
Dyspraxia is a hidden disability that affects about 6% of European pupils. It has an impact on four major activities in school: reading, writing, arithmetic and organisation. The general awareness of public authorities and the educational community has been improving in recent years, but access to appropriate, interoperable resources connected to the school curriculum remains a critical need for those concerned.
