The project
The Titimé pour apprendre project aims to harness the richness of oral tradition to place it at the heart of fundamental learning at school, and thus meet the dual challenge of literacy and the transmission of knowledge and culture.
The aim of this project is to help primary school pupils acquire literacy and basic skills by supporting the co-publishing (participative and inclusive publishing) of digital and printed books, and by training professionals in the book industry (librarians, publishers, mediators) and education (teachers, educators) in the production and distribution of these works.
Context
Chad faces a double challenge: the illiteracy rate is one of the highest in the world. Women are particularly affected (nearly 80%). The literacy rate in rural areas is extremely low. It’s also a country with an extraordinary wealth of languages (over 200) and a powerful oral heritage (stories, know-how, traditions). But this heritage is currently at risk if it is not passed on and safeguarded between generations in durable forms, such as books, and transcribed into the languages taught at school (French and Arabic).
